Weekend schedule is full with fall festival events

— Gentry’s annual Fall Festival is scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 14, from noon to 5:30 p.m., with some events beginning even sooner.

“Pickin’ Time on 59,” a multi-community yard- and garage-sale event to be held in communities along Arkansas Highway 59, begins Oct. 12 and continues through Oct. 14. Some sales may begin on the 11th; and a number of cities, including Gentry and Decatur, have granted an exemption to the usual yard-sale permit requirements for that weekend.

Gentry’s annual quilt show begins Oct. 12 and continues through Oct. 19. For more information, contact Janie Parks at 736-2340.

A cruise night (with no burn outs) will be held on Gentry’s Main Street from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13. It is sponsored by the Gentry Volunteer Fire Department. The Outdoor Adventures 4-H Club will be selling barbecue sandwiches. For more event information, call the fire department at 736-9976.

A car show will be held between 12 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, in the city park. It is being sponsored by the Gentry Volunteer Fire Department. More information is available at the number above.

Farm Frenzy, including mutton bustin’ and other children’s events - a chicken chase for ages 2-3 and calf scramble for ages 7-9 - will be held in the city park at 2 p.m. on the afternoon of Oct. 14. Registrations will be accepted from 12 to 1 p.m. on the day of the event. The events are sponsored by the Outdoor Adventures 4-H Club. Bloomfield 4-H will sponsor pumpkin painting in the park on Sunday afternoon.More information is available from Georgia Harper at 736-2543.

A chili cook-off is planned, with Denny Whitehead the contact person, 233-0419.

McKee Foods Employees’ Recreation Association is sponsoring a 5K run and walk, with more information available from Adam Carter, 736-2601, ext. 3301.

And, for those with talent, a show and contest are being planned for the city park stage on Oct. 14, with three age categories: Junior - 0 to 12 years; Senior - 13 to 18 years; and Adult - 19 and older. Prizes will be awarded in each category. Entry forms may be picked up and returned to the Gentry Public Library and must be returned no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10. The Little Debbie store in Gentry will sponsor “The Great Pumpkin Decorating Contest” at the Oct. 14 festival in the city park, with awards and prizes for the top pumpkins.

There will be three categories: best carved, best decorated and community favorite. First-place winners will receive a $25 prize, and second-place winners (in best carved and best decorated) will receive $15.

Only one pumpkin per person in each category may be entered. Carved pumpkins may be embellished with other materials. Decorated pumpkins may have objects, paper or other materials pinned or glued to them. Drawing or painting on the decorated pumpkins is also allowed.

Pumpkins will be judged on originality, quality of work and best design.

Each pumpkin will be displayed with a decoratedcan next to it and whichever collects the most money will be announced as the community favorite.

Other rules include the following:

◊Lighting for pumpkins must be battery operated. No candles will be permitted.

◊All entries must be real. No artificial pumpkins will be accepted.

◊Best carved and best decorated will be announced at 2 p.m. Community favorite will be announced at 5 p.m.

◊All entries must be in the contest area no later than 12:30 p.m. Entries must be picked up between 5:30 and 7 p.m. on Oct. 14 or they will be discarded.

Entry forms are available at the Little Debbie Store, Gentry Chamber of Commerce, the Gentry Public Library and online at www.gentrychamber.com. Applications, along with $10 nonrefundable entry fee, must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. today. They can be dropped off or mailed to the Gentry Public Library, 105 E. Main, Gentry, AR 72734.
