Bulldogs win closer to state playoffs

— The Bulldogs are one win closer to a spot in the 2A conference state playoffs after defeating the Union Christian Academy Eagles 46-14 on Friday.

Decatur now has a 5-4 record overall and a 4-3 record in conference play. If the Bulldogs win their final game against the Magazine Rattlers on Friday, they willbe assured a spot in the playoffs, according to head coach Shane Holland.

If Decatur doesn’t win Friday, it may still make it to the playoffs but it will depend on whether or not other teams in the conference win or lose their games, Holland explained. The last time the Bulldogs made it to state was in 1997.

The Bulldogs had a sluggish start on Friday night, and the Eagles ended thefirst quarter with a one point lead. Decatur surged back to take a 19-7 lead at half-time.

Sophomore Victor Urquidi rushed for 221 yards on 19 carries, bringing his season total to 1,030 rushing yards. Urquidi also had 4 completed passes for 124 yards on Friday.

Senior Evan Owens rushed for 51 yards on 3 carries, scoring one touchdown. Owens also returned an interception for a touchdown.Senior Nou Thor scored on a 62 yard pass. Thor also had an interception and three pass deflections on the defensive side.

Decatur will face Magazine, with a record of 4-5 overall and 4-3 in conference, for their senior night game on Friday.

Celebrations will begin with a pep rally at 12:45 p.m. Senior night ceremonies will start at 6:35 p.m., followed by the game at 7 p.m.
