GENTRY — It was a first in Gentry last week for the cross country team, the first time a meet was held on the Gentry High School campus, and Gentry took first in the girls’ competition.
When Eureka Springs was going to cancel the conference cross country meet, Gentry coaches Michael Graham and Daniel Ramsey stepped up, prepared a course and hosted the event - the first time anyone can remember a cross country meet being held at Gentry High School.
And in the girls’ division, freshman Mallory Morris took the lead from the start and never let up. She ran the 3.2 mile race in 21.32 minutes, finishing 21 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Clara Somerville of Ozark, and almost a full minute ahead of the third-place runner, Natalie Flippo of Pea Ridge.
For the boys, Colby Bryant finished in sixth place on the course, with a time of 19.30 minutes. The firstplace runner was Oliver Perez of Berryville, with a time of 17.52.
Whether or not Gentry will host other cross country meets at the high school remains to be seen, but some commented that the course was one of the best cross country courses they had run during the season.
