Youth Sports looking ahead

— Decatur Youth Sports coaches and volunteers met Aug. 25 in the Gallery Cafe to form a new board and discuss plans for the future.

Decatur Youth Sports has been a part of the community for a number of years. The organization helps to organize and raise funds for local sport teams - including T-ball, youth baseball, softball and cheerleading - as well as providing coaches and umpires for these sports.

It was decided at the Aug. 25 meeting that the organization’s mission statement will be “to help mold the youth of Decatur through competition and provide a solid foundation of athletics and sportsmanship.”

Jeremy Luker was elected board president, Jason Merworth as vice president and Brandon McBride as secretary.

Board members made plans for future fund raisers and decided to take steps to apply for a 501(c)3 status with the Internal Revenue Service to encourage donations. They also discussed the possibility of expanding the selection of sports offered to include soccer, football and basketball.

The next Decatur Youth Sports board meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 9 in Decatur Northside Elementary School. More information can be found on the Facebook group page “Decatur Youth Sports.”
