Sharp attends pharmacy camp

— Russell Sharp, Gravette High School senior, is one of 37 applicants selected to attend the 2012 Pharmacy Summer Camp on the University of Arkansas Medical Science (UAMS) campus in Little Rock.

Sharp, the son of Roger and Janna Sharp, intends to pursue a career in pharmacy, and during the camp he learned “handson” training in pharmacy practice skills, heard lectures by College of Pharmacy faculty and took field trips to pharmacy practice locations.

Sharp also learned about education opportunities and the pharmacy curriculum at UAMS and career opportunities, as well as interviewing and communications skills.

Selection was extremely competitive, and the 2012 class included 35 students from Arkansas, one from Louisiana and one from Kansas. Each had to submit transcripts, letters of recommendation and an essay explaining why they wanted to be a pharmacist.

The students toured the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, State Poison Control Center, Cardinal Health (Nuclear Pharmacy), UAMS (robotics) Simulation Center and the Biomedical Science Center in Little Rock.
