'Wheels come off ' in season opener

— The Bulldogs lost 43-14 to the Mountainburg Dragons during Friday’s 4-2A conference game.

The victory gives the Dragons a record of 2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have a record of 1-2 overall and a 1-1 in conference play.

The Bulldogs played well during the first half of the game but the “wheels came off” in the second half, according to Decatur head coach Shane Holland.

“But you know, you’ve got to put two halves together to win a game,” he said.

The halftime score was 14-7 but the Bulldogs made several mistakes and gave up 22 points during the third quarter, Holland said.

Sophomore Victor Urquidi had 20 carries during the game for 96-yards and a touchdown. He also completed 9 out of 17 passes, including a 45-yard touchdown pass to senior Evan Owens.

Defensively, Owens matched up with one of the Dragon’s key players and basically took him out of their offense, Holland said.

“Evan did a great job on him,” he said.

Mountainburg’s Nathan Jones ran for 192 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Robert Nolen.

The Bulldogs will face the Hackett Hornets, with a 3-0 record, at Friday’s conference game to be held in Hackett.
