Helser wins state singing honors

GRAVETTE - Many students, as well as teachers, are buzzing about 16-yearold sophomore Shelby Helser. Why? Because she “is a powerhouse of a voice,” said Damayla Cowan.

Born in Seattle, Wash., Shelby’s love for singing began already in kindergarten. And, in her 16 years, she has performed in more than 25 plays and musicals.

“I participated in the Gentry fall festival. I won $200 and second place,” Shelby said.

Since then, Shelby competed in the all-state choir competition. She was one of the 360 chosen for all-state choir and she advanced in competition to fourth chair soprano in the state choir.

“Everyone’s voices blended really well at state and the audience enjoyed the performance.” Shelby said. “I also liked meeting people from all over Arkansas,” she said.

Shelby hopes to continue singing beyond high school.

“I do not see my hobby ending after high school. I love singing too much to quit (because it) connects people in a way that words just cannot,” she said.
