High school updates storm-safety procedures

— Decatur High School has been working with Mike Hickson of Benton County Emergency Management to update storm safety procedures, according to principal Deborah Coffer.

Hickson toured theschool on Feb. 14 to help determine the safest locations for students to take shelter in the event of a tornado, Coffer said.

He took issues, such as keeping away from doors and flying glass, into consideration and talked about extra precautions that should be taken in the event of a direct hitfrom a tornado, she said.

Coffer said she is working with the school board to look into other measures to provide even safer options in the future.

Expanded curriculum

Coffer also reported that she has been meeting with K-12 Learning to discuss the implementation of a richer curriculum.

The online learning company could allow the school to offer more foreign language courses, more advanced placement courses and more electives to better meet the needs of Decatur’s multicultural student population.

The program could also be expanded to allow the school to help meet the needs of home school students, Coffer said.
