New sign on trail up only a few days before vandals strike

— A sign that had been installed along Gravette’s nature trail was discovered bent almost double only a few days after installation.

The heavy metal sign had replaced one that had been vandalized at the trail in Pop Allum Park. It directed hikers to a woodland trail loop that complements the paved walking trail. Vandals have caused damage along the trail several times during recent months.

Allyson Ransom and her son, Max, went hiking on the trail during the Christmas break and discovered the damage. Ransom, who is director of communications for the city, wrote the grant request which saw the trail expanded and upgraded last spring.

She hopes future grants will allow the trail to be expanded further.

“It was made of very thick metal and whoever did it had to push so hard the bolts were loosened and the post in the ground came loose,” Ransom said.

Police were able to bend the sign back somewhat so it will not have to be immediately replaced.

Ransom encourages people to be on the lookout and report any vandalism, particularly at the south end of the trail. Notify the police department, 787-6948, or call her at city hall, 787-5368.
