Farmers’ Market Vouchers

Signup for 2013 senior farmers’ market nutrition vouchers will be held this week. Applicants must be 60 years of age or older and provide photo identification and proof of household income. Coupons are good from May 1 through Oct. 31. Signups will be held Thursday at the Billy V. Hall Senior Activity Center, 1870 Limekiln Road, Gravette, from 9 a.m. until noon; and at the Gentry Senior Activity Center, 121 East Main Street, Gentry, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 787-5950 or 736-0378.

SNAP Program

The Department of Human Services will be at the Billy V. Hall Senior Center in Gravette at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 19, to enroll people in the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program. SNAP is a program to help end hunger and improve nutrition and health. To qualify, monthly net income must be less than $931 for one person or $1,261 for two, or one must qualify for assistance with food stamps. The center is hoping to reach people who are 60 or more years of age or live with a disability and who meet income guidelines.

Math-A-Thon

Students at Decatur Northside Elementary School are participating in the St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon. The school has set a goal to raise $1,500. Community members and businesses that would like to donate to help the school reach its fundraising goals can contact the school office at 752-3981.

Dr. Suess Week

Decatur Northside Elementary School will celebrate Read Across America Week from March 4 through 8. Students will celebrate Dr. Suess’ birthday and have two spirit days. Thursday, March 7, will be pajama day, in honor of the “The Sleep Book.” Friday, March 8, will be hat day, in honor of “The Cat in the Hat.” An assembly for students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade will be held at 1:30 p.m., March 8.

International Night

Decatur Northside International Night will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m., May 2. Anyone who would like to have a booth or provide entertainment representing a country is asked to contact Leslie Thompson at 752-3981.

Friendly Neighbors

On March 7, the Friendly Neighbors organization will celebrate 55 years of service to Sulphur Springs by holding a special potluck luncheon from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the old school lunchroom. The organization was started in March of 1958 to bring a positive, goodwill message through service to community and helping individuals and families during times of need. The organization meets the first Thursday of every month. All are invited to the potluck, but membership is for women only.

Inner Workings of City

Government

Anyone interested in Sulphur Springs’ city government, wanting to run for public office, or desiring to know how city ordinances affect them is invited to attend a free seminar from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the evenings of March 7 and April 4 at the Shiloh Retreat Center Dining Hall. The two-part seminar will be hosted by former Mayor Harris Steele and will cover the history of Sulphur Springs’ government, the mayor and council form of governing and city ordinances. Garden Planning Workshop

Harris Steele and Roy Allen invite “old hats” as well as first-time vegetable gardeners to join their Garden Planning Workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., March 9, in the Shiloh Retreat Center Dining Hall. Those attending will learn what plants best suit their needs, when to plant certain vegetables and how best to prepare for their planting. For their $10 donation, attendees will receive lunch, an informative packet on plants and planting, along with several varieties of plant sets ready for placing in their garden. Hot Roll Fundraiser

The Billy V. Hall Senior Activity Center is taking orders for hot rolls through Wednesday, March 27. Price is $5 per dozen. Call 787-5950 to order. Delivery is available to Gravette businesses. Other orders must be picked up on between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday, March 29, at the center, located at 1870 Limekiln Road. Proceeds go to the Meals on Wheels program and daily operations.

Gravette Community

Gardens

Ground is being prepared at Gravette Community Gardens for those who wish to cultivate a free 12’x12’ or 12’x24’ plot this spring and summer. Applications and rules can be picked up and dropped off at the Bank of Gravett, Arvest Bank, Care and Share or Gravette City Hall. The garden is located across from Arvest Bank on Arkansas Highway 59. Plots will be assigned on a firstcome, first-served basis. Some seeds and plants will be provided. Community members, families and civic groups are invited to take part. A portion of each plot’s produce will be donated to charity. For questions, contact Miriam at 787-5032.

GUE Musical Date Changed

The Gravette Upper Elementary spring musical, originally scheduled for Thursday, March 14, has been changed to Tuesday, April 30, at 7 p.m., at the Gravette Schools’ Performing Arts Center.

Reading Program Resumes

The reading program at Gravette Public Library resumed Tuesday, March 5, and will continue each Tuesday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. This storytime is for pre-kindergarten children.

New Gentry Book Club

Gentry Public Library has announced the forming of Turn the Page Book Club for those looking to immerse themselves into a good book, spend time with like minds and meet old friends and new. The Gravette Historical Museum is trying to complete an entire set of Gravette school annuals. Anyone willing to donate an annual, please call Lavon Stark at 787-5678. Years needed are all years prior to 1946, ‘50, ‘52 to ‘58, ‘60 to ‘67, ‘73 to ‘79, ‘80, ‘81, ‘84, ‘97 to ‘99, 2001, ‘02, ‘04, ‘07, ‘11, ‘12.

Decatur Story Time

The Iva Jane Peek Library will hold story time from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the first Wednesday of the month. All ages are welcome. The story time will focus on preschoolage children. For more information, call 752-7323.

Community Food Bank

Decatur Methodist Church offers a community food bank from 5 to 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month, at 230 Third Street. The food pantry requires identification and proof that mail is received at an address in the 72722 zip code, such as a utility bill, rent deposit or bank statement. The USDA Commodity Program is also available. Proof of income is required. Those receiving food stamps are automatically qualified with an acceptance letter.

Decatur Food Pantry

United Christian Charities has opened a food pantry in downtown Decatur for anyone needing food in the northwest Arkansas area. The hours of operation are Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The point of contact is Tina Holt, 435-5699.

Feed My Sheep Hours

The Feed My Sheep food pantry in Gravette is open each Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Maysville Food Pantry

Maysville Missionary Baptist Church opens its food pantry, Our Healing Hearts, every fourth Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for those in need.

Church Singing

Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist in Sulphur Springs holds a singing service every fourth Saturday of the month, starting at 6:30 p.m. A potluck dinner follows. For more information, call Jheri Roberts, the pastor, at 752-7082.

Praise and Worship

Maysville Missionary Baptist Church holds a praise and worship service at 6 p.m. every third Sunday night, with refreshments following.

Saint Patrick’s Day Service

The Gentry Church of God (Holiness) will be holding a Saint Patrick’s Day service on Sunday, March 17, at 11 a.m., to learn more about the man of God who inspired the holiday. Tired Iron of the Ozarks

Regular meetings of the Tired Iron of the Ozarks are held at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Tired Iron clubhouse located at the club’s show grounds on Taylor Orchard Road southwest of Gentry. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 19.

Cemetery Preservation

Meeting

The Benton County Cemetery Preservation Group invites all members and interested persons to attend its annual meeting at 9 a.m. on March 9, at 306 NW 2nd St., Bentonville. The meeting will include the nomination and election of officers and board members and a discussion on the preservation of cemeteries.

Gravette American Legion

Gravette American Legion Post 20 meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. All veterans are encouraged to attend. The next meeting is March 19.

Gravette Kiwanis

The Gravette Kiwanis Club holds breakfast meetings at 7 a.m. each Friday at the cafeteria in Ozarks Community Hospital. Guests are welcome.

Singing Services

Monthly singing services at Falling Springs Church are held at 7 p.m., the first Friday of each month. The church is located northwest of Gentry and west of Decatur on Falling Springs Road.

Men's Fellowship

First Baptist Church of Gentry has a monthly men's fellowship gathering at 8 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. All men are welcome to come for food and fellowship. Guests are welcome. For more information, contact Madden Waits at 736-5009.

VFW Meetings

Decatur VFW Post 9834 meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. New members and guests are welcome. The facility is three miles east of Decatur on Arkansas Highway 102, right on Tilly’s Hill Road, and the first building on the right.
