Decatur toughening up for league play

DECATUR - Decatur girls’ and boys’ soccer teams fell to 1-7A Rogers Heritage High junior varsity team during a non-conference game on Thursday.

The Bulldogs face the War Eagles junior varsity team every year to get ready for the conference season, said Decatur Coach James Garner.

“It’s good practice for our kids and for theirs,” he said.

The Lady Bulldogs did well in the first half, only giving up two goals to the War Eagles, Garner said. In the second half they lost another six points to Rogers.

“They’ve been facing teams with 25-35 girls. They just can’t keep up with that many girls,” he said.

Garner said he was very proud of goalie Lynlee Witcher.

“She stopped a bunch of shots,” he said. “She’s got a great season in front of her.”

Sarah Harris also did a really good job playing forward, Garner said.

“She’s a really good player but a little out of practice because she’s been playing basketball,” he said.

The Bulldogs lost 1-2 to the War Eagles.

“Once again, it was a situation where they had quite a few players and we had three subs,” Garner said.

Nou Thor scored a goal for Decatur on a penaltykick.

The Bulldogs lost 0-6 to the 1-5A Huntsville Eagles on Monday night. The Lady Bulldogs lost 0-8.

Decatur boys faced the 4-2A Eureka Springs Highlanders at home after press time on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Decatur boys team will face the 4-4A Subiaco Academy Trojans.
