Prayer Breakfast

A prayer breakfast will be held from 7 to 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, at the Gentry First Christian Church, located at the corner of Second and Giles Streets. The breakfast is sponsored by the Gentry Ministerial Alliance and is a part of the 62nd annual National Day of Prayer. Community members are invited to attend and pray for the nation, state and community.

Cemetery Work Day

The stewards of Bethel Cemetery announce a work day will be held at the cemetery Saturday, May 4, at 9:30 a.m. All who are interested in maintenance of the cemetery are urged to come, bring needed tools and help keep the cemetery beautiful.

Pee Wee Cheerleaders

A sign-up for Gravette pee wee cheerleaders will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 11, in the hospitality room at the Arvest Bank in Gravette. Any girl entering pre-K through sixth grade next year is eligible. Another sign-up will be held June 8 at the same time and location. Anyone with questions may call Maria Holloway, 936-0687.

Rebels Pancake Breakfast

A pancake breakfast is set for 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 4, at the Gentry High School basketball concession stand to benefit the Rebels baseball team with entry fees and travel expenses to attend showcase tournaments. Pancakes and sausage are $5 ($2.50 for children 5 and under); biscuits and gravy - $2; scrambled eggs or sausage - $1 each; orange juice, milk or coffee - $1 each.

Letter Carriers Food Drive

The 21st annual National Letter Carriers Association food drive will be held Saturday, May 11, and donations of nonperishable food items (no home-canned items) are now being accepted at the Gravette Post Office. Persons may drop their donations in a large bin in the lobby until the national drive May 11, when carriers will pick up donations as they make their rounds on rural routes. All food items will be given to the Feed My Sheep food bank in Gravette, which serves the Gravette area.

Gentry Kindergarten Registration

Enrollment for kindergarten 2013-14 has begun at Gentry Primary School on Pioneer Lane in Gentry. The age requirement is to be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2013. Enrollment packets are in the school office.

Sulphur Springs Indian Taco Dinner

The city of Sulphur Springs is holding an Indian taco dinner on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the old school cafeteria. Cost will be $7.50 for adults and $4.00 for children for Indian tacos, drink and dessert. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of a mandated fire suppression system for the cafeteria. Springtime Pickin’ Time

Springtime Pickin’ Time will be held in Gentry and Decatur May 2 through 5. The event is sponsored by the Gentry and Decatur Chambers of Commerce. Participants are encouraged to host garage and rummage sales, as well as antique and collectible events. Anyone wishing to set up in Gentry but not having a space may contact Bev Saunders at 736-2358. Gentry City Council has waived the requirement for garage sale permits for that weekend. Participants are responsible for their own advertising, set up, take down and cleanup.

Benefit Concert Book Signing

Gravette musician/author Crow Johnson Evans will hold a concert (with Still On The Hill) and book signing from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the new stage on Hwy. 71 in Winslow. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Ozark Folkways, a 501c3 organization. Admission is $10. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. Beans, cornbread, drinks and desserts will be available.

Bates Reunion

Evelyn Wilmoth of Gravette announced a reunion of family and friends of Goldie Bates will be held Sunday, May 19,at the First Baptist Church in Gravette. It will start at noon with a potluck dinner. Everyone should bring a dish. Meat will be provided. Please RSVP, 479-787-5357, so planners have an idea for how many to prepare.

Old Timer’s Day

Old Timer’s Day will be held in Southwest City, Mo., Saturday, May 4, sponsored by the SWC Commercial Club. Activities will include a pancake breakfast at the Full Gospel Church, races, a parade, crafters, local entertainment and a “Kiddie Tractor Pull” at 1 p.m. on Main Street. Outhouse Race 2013

The Southwest City (Mo.) Commercial Club will be hosting its First Annual Outhouse Race” at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, during “Old Timer’s Day.” Teams of 3 to 5 persons will compete in powering their “people-powered potties” down Main Street. There is no entry fee and prizes will be awarded. Teams are encouraged to dress in costume to fit the theme of their outhouse. Deadline for outhouse race entry was Saturday, April 27. International Night

Decatur Northside International Night will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m., May 2. Anyone who would like to have a booth or provide entertainment representing a country is asked to contact Leslie Thompson at 752-3981.

Turkey/Skeet Shoot

A turkey/skeet shoot is planned from 1 p.m. until dark, May 25, at the Holland Farm in Highfill to raise money to send Gentry High School wrestler “Cowboy” Cody Watson to represent the state of Arkansas in a wrestling tournament in Australia. Cody placed sixth at state in his freshman year and fourth in his sophomore year. He plans to wrestle in college. The Holland Farm is located on Cowan Road (off Arkansas Highway 12) in Highfill. Events will include trap shoot, elimination shoot, spot shot, horseshoes, Bag-O and a bounce house for kids. All age groups and experience levels welcome. Prices are$5 per round, with five shots per round. Prizes include turkey, ham and 50/50 cash wins. Maysville Yard Sale

The annual Maysville community yard sale will be held Saturday, June 1, inside the Maysville Community Building. Anyone wishing to rent a booth (for $10) should call Gwen Singleton, 479-291-4520.

Gravette Community Gardens

Ground is prepared at Gravette Community Gardens for those who wish to cultivate a free 12’x12’ or 12’x24’ plot this spring and summer. Applications and rules can be picked up and dropped off at the Bank of Gravett, Arvest Bank, Care and Share or Gravette City Hall. The garden is located across from Arvest Bank on Arkansas Highway 59. Plots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Some seeds and plants will be provided. Community members, families and civic groups are invited to take part. A portion of each plot’s produce will be donated to charity. For questions, contact Miriam at 787-5032.

Reading Program

The reading program at Gravette Public Library continues each Tuesday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. This storytime is for pre-kindergarten children.

New Gentry Book Club

Gentry Public Library has announced the forming of Turn the Page Book Club for those looking to immerse themselves into a good book, spend time with like minds and meet old friends and new. Decatur Story Time

The Iva Jane Peek Library will hold story time from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the first Wednesday of the month. All ages are welcome. The story time will focus on preschool-age children. For more information, call 752-7323.

Community Food Bank

Decatur Methodist Church offers a community food bank from 5 to 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month, at 230 Third Street. The food pantry requires identification and proof that mail is received at an address in the 72722 zip code, such as a utility bill, rent deposit or bank statement. The USDA Commodity Program is also available. Proof of income is required. Those receiving food stamps are automatically qualified with an acceptance letter.

Decatur Food Pantry

United Christian Charities has opened a food pantry in downtown Decatur, across from Decatur State Bank, for anyone needing food in the northwest Arkansas area. The hours of operation are Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The point of contact is Tina Holt, 435-5699.

Feed My Sheep Hours

The Feed My Sheep food pantry in Gravette is open each Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Maysville Food Pantry

Maysville Missionary Baptist Church opens its food pantry, Our Healing Hearts, every fourth Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for those in need.

Church Singing

Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist in Sulphur Springs holds a singing service every fourth Saturday of the month, starting at 6:30 p.m. A potluck dinner follows. For more information, call Jheri Roberts, the pastor, at 752-7082.

Praise and Worship

Maysville Missionary Baptist Church holds a praise and worship service at 6 p.m. every third Sunday night, with refreshments following.

Tired Iron of the Ozarks

Regular meetings of the Tired Iron of the Ozarks are held at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Tired Iron clubhouse located at the club’s show grounds on Taylor Orchard Road southwest of Gentry. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 21.

Gravette American Legion

Gravette American Legion Post 20 meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. All veterans are encouraged to attend. The next meeting is May 21.

Gravette Kiwanis

The Gravette Kiwanis Club holds breakfast meetings at 7 a.m. each Friday at the cafeteria in Ozarks Community Hospital. Guests are welcome.

Singing Services

Monthly singing services at Falling Springs Church are held at 7 p.m., the first Friday of each month. The church is located northwest of Gentry and west of Decatur on Falling Springs Road.

Men's Fellowship

First Baptist Church of Gentry has a monthly men's fellowship gathering at 8 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. All men are welcome to come for food and fellowship. Guests are welcome. For more information, contact Madden Waits at 736-5009.

VFW Meetings

Decatur VFW Post 9834 meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. New members and guests are welcome. The facility is three miles east of Decatur on Arkansas Highway 102, right on Tilly’s Hill Road, and the first building on the right.
