School Choice Deadline

June 1 is the deadline for students wishing to transfer under Public School Choice to a nonresident school district. If mailed, the application form must be postmarked no later than June 1. An application must be submitted to both the nonresident and resident school districts. Restated, a School Choice application must be filed with the district the student wishes to leave and with the district where the student wishes to attend. Forms are available in the superintendent’s office at the respective school districts.

Fairmount Cemetery Association

The Fairmount Cemetery Association will have its annual dinner and business meeting on May 26 at the Fairmount Schoolhouse. Potluck dinner will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the program afterward. Officers and directors will be elected and the financial report will be given. The cemetery is supported completely by donations. Those with family members buried at Fairmount are encouraged to attend and support the Association. For further information, call 736-8125 or 524-3461.

Douglas Cemetery Services

Memoral Day services at Douglas Cemetery, east of Highfill, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26. Bruce Holland will be speaker. Everyone is welcome.

Highfill Cemetery Committee Meeting

The Highfill Cemetery Decoration Committee will meet Sunday, May 26, at 11 a.m., in the community building. A potluck will follow.

Renaissance Fair

A free Renassaince Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, at Old Town Park in Gravette. The event is sponsored by the Gravette Library Commission. Activities will include armored combat, archery on horseback, quintain competition (tilting at a mounted target) and padded sword battles. Animals from Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari in Gentry will be on display. Booths will feature heraldry, face painting and fairies. Music and songs from the medieval period will be played. A bounce house will be provided, and vendors will offer a variety of food items with period and nonperiod merchandise.

Pee Wee Cheerleaders

A sign-up for Gravette pee wee cheerleaders will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 8, in the hospitality room at the Arvest Bank in Gravette.Any girl entering pre-K through sixth grade next year is eligible. Anyone with questions may call Maria Holloway, 936-0687.

Gentry Kindergarten Registration

Enrollment for kindergarten 2013-14 is ongoing at Gentry Primary School on Pioneer Lane in Gentry. The age requirement is to be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2013. Enrollment packets are in the school office.

Turkey/Skeet Shoot

A turkey/skeet shoot is planned from 1 p.m. until dark, May 25, at the Holland Farm in Highfill to raise money to send Gentry High School wrestler “Cowboy” Cody Watson to represent the state of Arkansas in a wrestling tournament in Australia. Cody placed sixth at state in his freshman year and fourth in his sophomore year and plans to wrestle in college. The Holland Farm is located on Cowan Road (off Arkansas Highway 12) in Highfill. Events will include trap shoot, elimination shoot, spot shot, horseshoes, Bag-O and a bounce house for kids. All age groups and experience levels welcome. Prices are $5 per round, with five shots per round. Prizes include turkey, ham and 50/50 cash wins. Maysville Yard Sale

Due to a conflict the annual Maysville Community Yard Sale sponsored by the Maysville EH Club has been postponed until June 15 at 7:30 a.m. Anyone wishing to rent a booth (for $10) should call Gwen Singleton, 291-4520.

Community Garden

Plots are still available at the Gravette Community Garden for anyone in the area who would like to try a small garden. The first planting day is set for May 25, with June 1 and 8 as follow-up days. Seed and plant donations are welcome. Produce from the garden will go to help Feed My Sheep, Care and Share and the Senior Center. Anyone who would like to have a plot or help with the general garden as a volunteer and reap some of the benefits of growing vegetables may call Miriam at 787-5032.

Library Commission Meeting Change

The June meeting of the Gravette Public Library Commission has been changed to the second Tuesday of the month rather than the usual first Tuesday, due to a conflict. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at the library.

Gravette Summer Reading Program

The summer reading program at Gravette Public Library will be held from 10:30 until noon, June 3-7, for children ages 5 to 12. The theme of the program will be “Dig Into Reading” with the following special topics each day: Monday, “Pirates”; Tuesday, “Dinosaurs”; Wednesday, “Gems”; Thursday, “Gardening” and Friday “Animals Underground.” The library is located just east of the Gravette Civic Center. Storytime Program

The storytime program at Gravette Public Library continues each Tuesday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. This storytime is for pre-kindergarten children.

Gentry Book Club

Gentry Public Library hosts a Turn the Page Book Club for those looking to immerse themselves into a good book, spend time with like minds and meet old friends and new. Decatur Story Time

The Iva Jane Peek Library will hold story time from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the first Wednesday of the month. All ages are welcome. The story time will focus on preschool-age children. For more information, call 752-7323.

Community Food Bank

Decatur Methodist Church offers a community food bank from 5 to 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month, at 230 Third Street. The food pantry requires identification and proof that mail is received at an address in the 72722 zip code, such as a utility bill, rent deposit or bank statement. The USDA Commodity Program is also available. Proof of income is required. Those receiving food stamps are automatically qualified with an acceptance letter.

Decatur Food Pantry

United Christian Charities has opened a food pantry in downtown Decatur, across from Decatur State Bank, for anyone needing food in the northwest Arkansas area. The hours of operation are Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The point of contact is Tina Holt, 435-5699.

Feed My Sheep Hours

The Feed My Sheep food pantry in Gravette is open each Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Maysville Food Pantry

Maysville Missionary Baptist Church opens its food pantry, Our Healing Hearts, every fourth Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for those in need.

Church Singing

Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist in Sulphur Springs holds a singing service every fourth Saturday of the month, starting at 6:30 p.m. A potluck dinner follows. For more information, call Jheri Roberts, the pastor, at 752-7082.

Praise and Worship

Maysville Missionary Baptist Church holds a praise and worship service at 6 p.m. every third Sunday night, with refreshments following.

Tired Iron of the Ozarks

Regular meetings of the Tired Iron of the Ozarks are held at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Tired Iron clubhouse located at the club’s show grounds on Taylor Orchard Road southwest of Gentry. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 18.

Gravette American Legion

Gravette American Legion Post 20 meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. All veterans are encouraged to attend. The next meeting is June 18.

Gravette Kiwanis

The Gravette Kiwanis Club holds breakfast meetings at 7 a.m. each Friday at the cafeteria in Ozarks Community Hospital. Guests are welcome.

Singing Services

Monthly singing services at Falling Springs Church are held at 7 p.m., the first Friday of each month. The church is located northwest of Gentry and west of Decatur on Falling Springs Road.

Men's Fellowship

First Baptist Church of Gentry has a monthly men's fellowship gathering at 8 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. All men are welcome to come for food and fellowship. Guests are welcome. For more information, contact Madden Waits at 736-5009.

VFW Meetings

Decatur VFW Post 9834 meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. New members and guests are welcome. The facility is three miles east of Decatur on Arkansas Highway 102, right on Tilly’s Hill Road, and the first building on the right.
