LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Editor,

I recently watched the movie “Parental Guidance” with Billy Crystal and Bette Midler. In one scene, Crystal is talking to his character daughter, reminiscing about his parenting. He thought he was doing a good job as a dad until she went off to college and didn't call or come home for holidays.

"Children don't come with a manual."

As a parent, I am constantly wondering if I am hurting or helping my children. I know "God covers a multitude of sins" but that doesn't guarantee the least amount of pain as a parent or for my child.

Thankfully there are those ahead of me who have taken Parenting 101 and are willing to share their wisdom.

“Stop and Think Parenting: A Guide to Children's Good Behavior” was a one-hour presentation presented at Glenn Duffy Elementary. I gained some new parenting skills, was reminded of some I haven't used in a while or had forgotten all together and left with a booklet of resources to refer to when my kid is pulling the power struggle card or humiliating me with a screaming tantrum in the middle of Walmart.

Jennifer Butler, from Ability Tree, Inc., presented the information.

Funding for the presentation was provided by a grant. If you are interested in “Stop and Think,” you can contact Butler at 373-6033 or www.abilitytree.org.
