Jessie Bates

Jessie Ann Bates, 100, of Southwest City, Mo., died May 19, 2013, at her home.

She was born March 5, 1913, in Gravette, to William Sherman and Laura Ann (Bullock) Riter. She was raised in Sulphur Springs and attended the Donivan School near Hiwasse. She married Troy Columbus Bates on Oct. 17, 1930, and had eight sons and one daughter. She was a hardworking and devoted homemaker. She enjoyed quilting and was a charter member of the Friendly Neighbor's Club in Sulphur Springs. She was of of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years; four sons, J.D., David, Troy and Kenneth "Butch" Bates; three grandsons; and four siblings, Myrtle Pendergraft, Faye Stevens, Bertha Evans and Sherman Riter, Jr.

She is survived by four sons, Jerry Bates and wife Kitty of Anderson, Mo., Dennis Bates and wife Joann of Mountain View, Mo., Paul Bates and wife Diana of Southwest City, Mo., and Mike Bates of Tulsa, Okla.; one daughter, Kay Drake and husband Roy of Siloam Springs; a daughter-inlaw, Mae Bates of Southwest City; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-greatgrandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Southwest City Cemetery in Southwest City, with Doyle Bates and Roy Drake officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Southwest City Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Home. Arrangements are by Ozark Funeral Home in Southwest City.

Ira Eaton

Ira Rayburn Eaton, 74, of Elkins, died May 14, 2013, at the Willard Walker Hospice Home in Fayetteville.

He was born March 29, 1939, near Red Star, to Ira and Lillie Fields Eaton. He was a graduate of Kingston High School, retired from Elkhart Products Company after 37 years of service and raised beef cattle for more than 50 years. He was a longtime member of the Elkins First Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He made his home in Elkins for 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gary Eaton; and one sister and three brothers-in-law, Nell and Norman Sloan, Ed Torbett, and Jack Carter.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Holiday Eaton of the home, whom he married on Dec. 19, 1959; two daughters and one son-in-law, Belinda and Rick Shaw of Wesley, and Rayetta Eaton, M.D., of Sulphur Springs; three brothers and four sistersin-law, Winfred and Jean Eaton and Roy and Brenda Eaton, all of Wesley, Arvis and Joann Eaton of Briggs, Texas, and Eva Parker of Elkins; seven sisters and four brothers-in-law, Joyce and Joel Bunch of Elkins, Sharon Carter of Huntsville, Norma and Ed Marshall of Wesley, Janice Torbett, Pat Eaton and Sandra and Darle Bowman, all of Fayetteville, and Linda and Dale Baxter of Texas; two granddaughters, including Abigail Wilmoth of Gentry.

Funeral services were May 18 in the chapel of Brashears Funeral Home, with Rex Griffin, Lynville Eaton, Ted Doke and Rex Eaton officiating. Interment was in the Kingston Cemetery. Arrangements were by Brashears Funeral Home of Huntsville.

Doris Hart

Doris Ann Hart, 75, of Siloam Springs, died May 16, 2013, at Siloam Springs Nursing and Rehab.

She was born Oct. 12, 1937, in Stilwell, Okla., to Howard Olinghouse and Clara Hickman Olinghouse. She married Jerry Dale Hart in 1958, in Stilwell. They moved to the Gentry area in 1969 from Hardesty, Okla. She worked for McKee Baking Company in Gentry until her retirement. She was a member of the Seventhday Adventist Church in Siloam Springs.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Brady, Perry Olinghouse, and Buddy Olinghouse; and two sisters, Betty Kester and Lola Mae Walls.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Hart of the home; one daughter, Teresa Netzel and husband Ray of Gentry; three grandchildren, including Lora Weygandt and husband Travis of Gentry, and Aaron Netzel of Gentry, and Jordan Netzel and wife Michelle of Memphis, Tenn.; and two great-grandsons.

Funeral services were May 18 at The Siloam Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church, Siloam Springs, with Larry Yeagley and Tony Cash officiating. Burial followed at Gentry Cemetery in Gentry.

Charles Hartley

Charles Walter Hartley, 81, of Rogers, died at his home on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

He was born April 19, 1932, in Wichita, Kan., to Edith and Edwin Hartley. He was a member of the Church of God, Seventhday, in Springdale. After graduating from high school, he worked for 19 years for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita. In 1969, he moved to Rogers, where he owned and operated the Hartley’s Daylight Donut Shop on Walnut Street for two years. Then, he built houses and churches for local contractors in the area until he retired in 1994. He was a volunteer at the Rogers Recycling Center after he retired. He enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling, fishing and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild, Michael Mc-Garrah; and one son-inlaw, Russell Mills.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan Hartley; three daughters and son-in-laws, Connie and James McGarrah of Rogers, Jeanie and Clarence Ullrich of Coweta, Okla., and Patty and Dale Merritt of Hiwasse; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Memorial was held Tuesday at First Baptist Church Lowell with Gary Thomas officiating. Interment followed at Rogers Cemetery. Arrangements were by Epting Funeral Home of Bentonville.

Arleen Knoderer

Arleen G. Knoderer, 91, of Sulphur Springs, died April 24, 2013, at Concordia Health and Rehabilitation.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., on June 4, 1921, to Harry and Clara (Prosche) Reuse. She grew up in Chicago and worked for her father as a bookkeeper. She attended a music conservatory and became a soloist, church organist, piano teacher and voice teacher. In the 1940s, she toured with a trio, The Melodears, and later sang at The Muny Opera in St. Louis. Locally, she was active in the Spavinaw Literacy Council in Gravette and the Friendly Neighbors Club. She was married to William Knoderer, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her children, John Knoderer, David Knoderer and Paula Knoderer Hrbacek; son-inlaw, Christopher Hrbacek; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held May 18 at Shiloh Retreat Center in Sulphur Springs. Cremation arrangements were by Callison-Lough Funeral Home of Bentonville.

James Woods

James L. Woods, 80, of Bentonville, died May 16, 2013, at his home in Bentonville.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1932, in Centerton, to Vivert Tom Woods and Melva Pitkin Woods. He was a farmer and outdoorsman and spent many of his days rising early in the morning to tend to his cattle and farm. In his later years, he traveled with his wife and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Louise Woods.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sue Dunnaway Woods, of the home; daughters, Paula Woods Anderson of Fort Smith, Rebecca A. Clinton of Gravette, and Jane Wilber and husband, Mitchell, of Gravette; sister, Marie Doolittle of Springfield, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were May 21 at the Bella Vista Funeral Home Chapel, Bella Vista, with Terry Longan officiating. Burial followed in the Bentonville City Cemetery. Arrangements were by Bella Vista Funeral Home & Crematory.
