Students learn bus safety through art

! Poster contest was held last month at Northside Elementary School.

— With school in full swing, it is sometimes hard for motorists to remember the rules when approaching a stopped school bus.

The entire month of October was deemed “School Bus Safety Month” nationwide. For students at Northside Elementary in Decatur, art was one way to spread the word.

Janette Raymond, art teacher at Northside, was approached by Sherman Robinson to create a poster contest for school bus safety month. Students were asked to draw a scene that best depicted the theme. The top winner in each grade-level won a prize and their art is on display in the main entrance of Northside Elementary.

Robinson and other bus drivers from the Decatur school district judged the contest. They also supplied the prizes for the contest.

The winners of the contest were Jenecis Batres - kindergarten, Heaven McGarrah - fi rst, Dayton Butler - second, Caden Owens - third, Kevin Sanchez - fourth, Cesar Flores - fifth, and Emmy Lee - sixth.

Their posters are on display in the main lobby near the cafeteria until mid-November.
