— The 2013 Pioneer football season came to a close Friday night in Star City in the opening round of the playoffs for Gentry.

Star City jumped ahead early in the game. Though Gentry made a strong effort to catch up, Star City continued to pull away for a 56-24 win.

After falling behind 14-0 in the fi rst quarter, Jarod Cousins carried one into the end zone for Gentry and narrowed the Star City lead to 8 points. But after a failed point-after kick, Star City scored again, making it a 21-6 game. Cousins struck once more, with a 1-yard TD run with less than a minute left in the opening quarter, closing the gap to 21-12 before the quarter’s end.

Star City picked up another TD on a pass play early in the second quarter, but Gentry answered with a pass to Dusty Haag to bring Gentry within 10 points, 28-18.

Star City carried the ball across Gentry’s goal line two more times before the half-time break, sending the Pioneers to the locker room down 42-18 at the half.

The third quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams possessing the ball and having opportunity. The Pioneers failed to close the gap, and Star City picked up another TD on a run and added a point after.

Star City increased its lead to 56-18 with another touchdown and point after early in the fourth.

But Gentry wasn’t done yet. Stone Faulkenberry threw an 11 yard pass to Bobby Montes for one last score of the season for the Pioneers. A twopoint conversion attempt failed, making the fi nal score Gentry 24, Star City 56.
