Lady Lions top Lady Pioneers at net

Gravette’s Lady Lions defeated the Lady Pioneers in Gentry on Thursday in 4A Northwest volleyball action 3-0.

The Lady Pioneers challenged the Lady Lions in the first set as scores went back and fourth until the end, with the Lady Pioneers coming up just short, 25-22.

The Lady Lions gained momentum in the second set, winning 25-5.

In the third and matchdeciding set, the Lady Lions pulled ahead and finished with a score of 25-13.

The Lady Lions improve to 5-4 overall with a conference record of 5-2. The Lady Lions are currently in third place in the 4A Northwest conference.

The Gravette girls won both of its matches on the week of Sept. 15-21. On Tuesday, the Lady Lions defeated Lincoln 3-0, winning the sets 25-16, 25-21, 25-19.

On Thursday, the Lady Lions won a fi ve-set match against Farmington 3-2. It was a back and forth match, with Gravette winning the first set, 25-20. Farmington won the second set, 13-25. Gravette battled back to win the third set, 25-23, and Farmington won the fourth set, 19-25, setting up a fi fth and final set. Gravette rallied to take the fifth set, 17-15.

Gravette was to host non-conference opponent Huntsville Monday night at Gravette High School and return to conference play on Tuesday when the girls hosted Prairie Grove.

Gentry was scheduled to play Berryville on Tuesday, at Gentry.

Epic Comeback

The Lady Pioneers made an epic comeback win against West Fork on Sept. 23, with scores in the match: 25-21, 17-25, 27-25, 25-20.

Down 24-16 in the pivotal third set, junior libero Vivi Serna served in nine straight points to help Gentry take the lead.

After West Fork tied it at 25, a huge block for a point by sophomore Haley Borgeteien-James, who led the team with 11 kills, was the difference for Gentry.

In all three of their winning sets, Gentry was down by at least 5 points.

“It was by far the most fun I’ve ever had as a volleyball coach,” said Gentry Coach Daren Ward. “I am so proud of the heart our girls showed, and our execution was on target the whole night. Hopefully this will give us some momentum to carry us into the second half of conference.” Junior Varsity Win

The Gentry junior varsity team won its first game of the year 25-21, 25-21, coming from behind in both sets as well.
