McCollum Park dedicated in Decatur

DECATUR - A community is only as good as its leadership and the citizens that serve it. Like many of the communities in this area, Decatur owes its continued existence to several individuals who helped to keep the community strong and healthy.

One such individual was long-time Decatur resident and physician, Dr. E.D. “Bud” Mc-Collum. McCollum practiced medicine for several decades in Decatur and founded the Decatur Medi Clinic. More then just a doctor, McCollum also served on both the city council and the chamber of commerce. His dedication to Decatur refl ects the true spirit of the community much the same as the leadership of Lloyd Peterson and the Decatur Development Corporation of the early 1950s.

Upon his passing, the McCollum family set up a memorial fund in his name. After purchasing and developing the current location, which includes the pavilion above the park, it was forgotten.

Families and other groups used the park, but it was assumed to be part of Edmiston Park. In July of 2013, the family approached the city of Decatur to redevelop the park by adding a road and parking area closer to the picnic area. Mayor Charles Linam asked the Decatur City Council to approve the addition and build a memorial marker. The council approved the measure and city workers completed the drive and parking lot in under a week.

McCollum Memorial Park is situated between Decatur’s Edmiston and Veterans Parks. It is located between the two Edmiston Park ball fi elds. Several trees, including an old oak shade tree, line the perimeter of the picnic area, making a beautiful shaded area for visitors. The park includes fi ve tables and a large barbecue grill in the center area of the park. It can accommodate small family or group picnics.

From the eastern end of Mc-Collum Park, the view of Veterans Park and the surrounding countryside is breathtaking. It is a real photographer paradise.

The park was formally dedicated on Oct. 10 during the city of Decatur picnic. Employees, family and friends were on hand to help celebrate the event.

McCollum’s wife, Chris, and granddaughter were on hand to join in the festivities. She had the park decorated with over 50 flower arrangements, adding to an already existing scenic beauty.

State Senator Jim Hendren and former State Senator Kim Hendren also attended the event in honor of Dr.

McCollum’slifetime of dedication to Decatur.

Oct. 10 was proclaimed Dr. E.N. “Bud” McCollum Day. Decatur Mayor Charles Linam read the proclamation to Mrs. Mc-Collum and presented her with a copy of the document.

In the middle of the north perimeter of the park sits a beautiful white stone with a plaque inscribed, “Dr. E.N. McCollum Memorial Park.”

The park will be open during regular Edmiston Park hours. Decatur residents are encouraged to use the park.
