GRAVETTE - Quick work by a rural mail carrier in Gravette saved letters and packages he was carrying on his route when his delivery vehicle caught fi re Thursday afternoon.

According to Gravette fi re chief David Smith, substitute mail carrier, Paul Martin, was delivering mail in Gravette when he noticed smoke in the cab of his Cherokee.

His quick investigation revealed a fire was possibly the cause, and he quickly unloaded all the mail before the vehicle burst into fl ames. By the time the fi re department arrived, the vehicle was totalled, Smith said. No injury was reported.

Gravette postmaster Gerald Garner had good wordsfor Martin. “He was doing his job and used good judgement. He’s one of our bestsubs; he’s a good man.”
