GRAVETTE -- The Gravette Farmers' Market will hold its season opening on Saturday, April 12, in Old Town Park.

This is the seventh season for the market and, again this year, the market will be open each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through November.

"Early crops such as spinach, lettuce, radishes, peas and asparagus should be available," said Evelyn McGraw and Allyson Ransom, co-managers. And, if not immediately available, it won't be long, they added.

The market will continue its offering of locally-produced honey, USDA locally-raised pork and chicken, as well as lots of plants. Homemade goodies are available and jellies and baked goods are popular items. Handiwork and craft items made by hometown and area artisans are attractive not only for local shoppers but for others who stop by the market off Arkansas Highway 72, just east of downtown Gravette at the crest of Old Town Park.

The market is part of the state agriculture department "Arkansas Grown" branding again this year and is linked with its own Facebook page and blog. A special guest segment on horticulturist P. Allen Smith's radio show is planned, the dates to be announced. Special attractions and surprises may be expected as they have been in past years.

The market accepts USDA WIC vouchers, senior nutrition program vouchers and Double the Money senior coupons and tokens. Call McGraw, 787-8489, or contact Ransom, [email protected], with any questions.

For those interested in participating, the rules are readily available. All offerings must be grown or produced in the area.

"Our primary goal is promoting the local economy and healthy eating by selling only locally-grown produce, as well as plants, creative and artistic craft items and wholesome baked goods," Ransom said.
