DECATUR -- The Decatur Bulldog junior high track and field team traveled to Vinita, Okla., to compete in the Vinita Hornet Relays April 5. The boys' team came home with a first place overall finish, beating out schools from both Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Shane Holland, track and field coach, was pleased with the commitment and hard work of both the junior high boys and girls during the meet.
"I was very proud with the way the junior high team performed during the Vinita track meet," Holland stated. "My freshmen did an outstanding job racking up points that contributed to the team winning the overall meet title."
Since the track season began in March, Holland has worked with a batch of young athletes that show real potential. Some have already shown their talents during several seventh and eighth grade meets.
"I have a group of outstanding seventh and eighth graders this year," Holland recalls. "It looks like I will be able to build my senior high team from these players in the future."
At present, Holland's senior high team is comprised of only 10 members. Holland hopes that with the right conditioning, coupled with a few meets under their belts, next year's senior team will be one to watch.
Decatur boys finished with 164 points, followed by Vinita, Okla., with 129 points and Jay, Okla., with 100 points.
