Decatur sets storm siren tests n First test is May 6

DECATUR -- The Decatur Fire Department will test the city's tornado siren system May 6 at 6:30 p.m.

According to Fire Chief Jeremy Luker, these tests are needed to assure that the system is fully operational and ready for tornado season.

The sirens will be tested at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month through September.

If threatening weather occurs, area residents are urged to tune in to either a local television station weathercast or to the National Weather Service for current watches or warnings.

The following information is provided by the National Weather Service:

A WATCH -- "A watch is used when the risk of a hazardous weather or hydrologic event has increased significantly, but its occurrence, location, and/or timing is still uncertain. It is intended to provide enough lead time so that those who need to set their plans in motion can do so."

A WARNING -- "A warning is issued when a hazardous weather or hydrologic event is occurring, is imminent, or has a very high probability of occurring. A warning is used for conditions posing a threat to life or property."

"If a warning is issued, residents are strongly urged to seek shelter immediately."

Decatur residents who have no tornado shelters available are urged to contact city hall for a list of certified public shelters.
