Decatur bands put on winter concert

DECATUR -- The air around Decatur was filled with the sounds of fanfare of trumpets announcing the coming of the Christmas season as the beginning and symphonic bands presented their annual winter concert Dec. 9 in the cafeteria at Decatur High School.

Both bands, under the direction of Kristin Wages, performed selections by George Poulton, John Higgins, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Benjamin Hanby and Robert Smith.

The beginning band is comprised of sixth-grade students from Northside Middle School. Their selections for this concert included the French folk song "Fére Jacques," "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, "Jingle Bells," "Up On the Housetop," "Aura Lee" and "Hard Rock Blues."

The symphonic band is comprised of students with more advanced musical skills from grades 7-12. They performed "Falcon Fanfare" by Brian Balmages, "A Hymn for Band," by Hugh Stuart, "In the Christmas Mood," arranged by John Wasson, and "African Bell Carol," arranged by Robert Smith.

Both bands gave an excellent performance as they played for a near-capacity house of family and friends.

Baritone -- Trevor Girdner, Myriam Ocampo

Tuba - Zac Luker

Percussion -- Bronwyn Berry, Emannuel Thao
