Hunters feed area's hungry

DECATUR -- With hunger on the rise, groups from across the country are reaching out to the population with help. One such group in Arkansas is working with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, hunters and taxidermists to help fight this growing problem.

The Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry is an organization that is dedicated to serving over a million meals a year to needy families across the state.

The organization depends on local game processors like Gina and Harold Holts of Harold's taxidermy in Decatur. Holts recently received a donation from a hunter who filled his quota but had more meat then he could use. Holts processed the venison into ground meat and donated it to the Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry organization which then donated it to the United Christian Charities food bank in Decatur.

Families who can not otherwise afford expensive meat products from the grocery store can contact any one of the food banks in Arkansas, including the one in Decatur. Most ground venison and other game products are donated to churches, children's shelters, rescue missions and food banks free of charges.

By donating leftover game, children and adults can obtain a low-fat, high-protein meal and no food stock from a killed animal is wasted.
