Wasson resigns as town attorney for Springtown

SPRINGTOWN -- In a brief final meeting of the current town council, held Dec. 12, outgoing mayor Paul Lemke read a letter of resignation from Carla Wasson, the town's attorney. Wasson's resignation will be effective Jan. 1, 2015.

Jan Cox, the town's recorder and treasurer, submitted a resignation letter last month and will also be leaving office at the close of the current year.

The council accepted the resignations of Wasson and Cox, according to unapproved minutes, meaning the new mayor and council on Jan. 1 will need to seek legal council for the town, as well as a new recorder-treasurer.

Lemke thanked Wasson for her years of service to the town, including her many donated hours.

Cox passed out a copy of the year-to-date cash-flow report, current through the last day of the previous month, for the General Fund and Street Fund, noting that the town's elected officials have received the final report from the Legislative Audit Committee of the review of the town's 2013 financial records which was completed in August. The report shows that the town was in compliance with Arkansas' fiscal and financial laws, the minutes state.

Mayor Lemke reported that, during the past month, repairs were made on the town's tractor, a load of SB2 was acquired for filling potholes and there is salt and sand ready for use during the coming winter months.

Lemke reported that the town is still waiting to hear a final decision regarding its second appeal of FEMA's decision regarding funds awarded the town for the repair of the old Aubrey Long Road Bridge which has since been replaced.

Lemke also expressed his hope that plans for the proposed walking trail will continue to be actively pursued in 2015. He reminded the council there will be a meeting in February to determine dispensation of the grant for which the town applied.

A town budget for 2015 was also adopted by unanimous vote of the council.

Lemke said he is still following up the request of a number of area residents to voluntarily annex into the town.

Lemke, noting it was the last meeting for the present group of council members, thanked them for their steadfast support through the years. The council also expressed its appreciation for the mayor's leadership and tireless efforts on the town's behalf.
