Gentry Middle School earns reward school status

GENTRY -- The Arkansas School Recognition Program announced that Gentry Middle School was among the top 20 percent of high performing schools in the state and will be awarded an additional $50 per student to use to further its educational program.

Larry Cozens, GMS principal, credited the school's success to his teaching staff, at the Dec. 15 school board meeting, and said the money would be used to purchase additional 14-inch-screen Chrome Books for student use.

Randy Barrett, superintendent of Gentry Schools, said that Cozens should also be recognized for his part in the school's success.

"Good leadership starts from the top," Barrett said, adding that Cozens has shown himself to be an excellent leader for the Middle School.

The Arkansas School Recognition Program was created by Arkansas Legislators to reward schools that experience high student performance and student academic growth. Schools in the top 10 percent receive an additional $100 per student. Schools in the top 11 percent to 20 percent receive an additional $50 per student.

"We would have loved to be in the top 10 percent," Cozens said, adding that there are more than 800 schools in the state that wish they did as well as the Gentry Middle School.
