Pioneers unwound at Lincoln, 46-38.Lincoln able to exert up-tempo in fourth.

By Mark Humphrey

LINCOLN -- Gentry came in hoping to catch league-leading Lincoln off guard a day after the Wolves regained the top spot in the 4A-1, but almost wasn't enough.

Gentry dictated the tempo throughout the first half and led 6-3 in a low-scoring first quarter, with a 14-13 halftime edge. The Pioneers were successful in getting to the foul line where they converted regularly, making 19-of-24 shots, but the game got away in the second half.

Although 24 of Gentry's 38 points came after intermission, the faster tempo favored the Wolves and Lincoln put up 33 second-half points to win, 46-38, with a 19-10 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.

Still, Gentry's effort and execution showed improvement over a, 65-47, home court loss to Lincoln in their conference opener Dec. 16.

But in the second quarter, the Lady Tigers began to roar, picking up 10 points to the Lady Pioneers' 7 and putting Prairie Grove ahead, 18-16, at the half. Karoline Page started off the period with a 3-pointer, and Mallory Morris added another deuce to widen Gentry's lead, but that was answered with shots by Lacy Beeks and Callie Robinson to take the lead.

Prairie Grove picked up another 7 points over Gentry in the third period, with the Lady Pioneers scoring only two baskets -- by Page and Borgeteien-James -- while the Lady Tigers put in 11 points.

Borgeteien-James missed a 3 pointer in the opening of the fourth period but got the rebound and put in a shot for two. She added another 2 points after a Prairie Grove turnover. Morris also sank a 3 pointer before the period was out, but Prairie Grove put 8 points on the board in the closing period -- all at the free-throw line -- to win by 10, 37-27.

At Lincoln on Saturday, the Lady Pioneers had a bad second period and just couldn't quite catch up, dropping the game by 3.

Kristen Flesner put the Lady Pioneers on the board first when she sank one from behind the 3-point line, and she sank another and added a free throw. Mallory Morris also sank a 3-pointer and a 2-point shot in the period, but the Lady Wolves fought their way back to take the lead until Aspen Cripps put in a free throw to tie the game at 13 each.

The Lady Pioneers got into trouble in the second period, picking up only 5 points on a pair of deuces by Haley Borgeteien-James and a free throw by Karoline Page. Shelby Rowe helped the Lady Wolves build a lead, hitting four free throws, and a 3 pointer. Ashton Rothrock added 2, and Taylor Cunningham put two more free-throws through the net.

Down, 24-18, at the half, Borgeteien-James put in another pair, and Flesner put in a shot for 2, to tie things up at 24. Rowe put in a basket for Lincoln, and Page answered with a 3-pointer to give Gentry the lead, 27-26. Jaycie Neeley grabbed the lead back for Lincoln with a 2-pointer and Rowe added a point at the free-throw line, but Mallory Morris dropped one in from outside the 3-point line to put the Lady Pioneers back on top, 30-29. Rowe was given four more shots at the line and sank three, to put Lincoln up by 2 points, 32-30, before the final period.

The Lady Pioneers tied it again in the fourth quarter after a shot by Morris for 2. Three Lincoln free throws gave them the edge, but Page tied it back up again with a 3 pointer and Jordan Olds put one through the hoop, putting Gentry back up by 2, 39-37. Courtney Lloyd put one in to tie it back up and then made a free-throw to put the Lady Wolves in the lead. Page put Gentry up with a pair of free throws, but the Lady Wolves weren't finished.
