FARMINGTON -- For the second consecutive year, Arkansas 59 rivals, Gravette and Gentry, met in the first-round of the District 4A-1 girls basketball tournament, but with a completely different result for 2014.

Gravette was the first team upset by Gentry during a 2013 post-season run which ended in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, but the Lady Lions made sure that didn't happen again with a 37-35 win, eliminating the Lady Pioneers on Feb. 18.

"Gentry played everybody solid all year long, they are a real tough team," said Gravette coach Will Pittman. "[Gentry] Coach [Tim] Fulks had a real good game plan."

Gentry took an early 8-2 lead on a pair of 3-pointers by Mallory Morris and two Haley Borgeteien-James' free throws, while Gravette's Maddie Foster was called for charging and drew her fourth personal in the first quarter.

Samantha Pruitt was scoreless in the first half, with Gentry holding a 16-9 lead. Midway through the third, Gravette's starting center, Sydney Hicks, also drew her fourth, forcing Pittman to shift into a zone, but the Lions responded.

"They stayed calm," Pittman said. "It was tough, but I knew they couldn't guard Samantha Pruitt that tight. Then we moved her inside in the second half. It made it harder to guard her."

By the time Pruitt got her first points with 4:32 left in the third frame, Gravette had clawed their way back to within a point on treys from Kylee Davis and Ella Duke. Pruitt's old-fashioned 3-point play put the Lions ahead, 18-16. Although Gentry led, 22-21, after three quarters, momentum had swung in the Lions' favor.

A 10-4 Gravette run pushed the Lions in front, 31-26, before Morris uncorked her third trifecta. Davis answered with two free throws, but Karoline Page knocked down a 3-pointer from the top-of-the-key with 30 seconds to go.

Pruitt then broke long against full-court pressure on the in-bounds play and drew contact on her way to the hoop. She scored and Gentry fans protested the bucket with the play resembling a WNBA continuation put into effect in high school.

Pruitt missed the free throw, leaving Gravette with a 35-32 lead. Seven seconds later, Borgeteien-James put the ball in at the other end for Gentry, drawing a foul in the process.

"Count that one," Gentry fans shouted with the same official making the call, but this time the basket was disallowed with 21 seconds remaining. The potential 3-point play could have tied the game, but with the basket waved off, the best Borgeteien-James could do was make 1-of-2 free throws, leaving Gentry two points down at 35-33.

Several seconds elapsed before another foul was called, sending Pruitt back to the line where she sank both. Borgeteien-James put in a missed Gentry 3-pointer with two seconds showing, but Gravette had no intention of in-bounding the ball and time expired.

With the 37-35 win, Gravette advanced to a quarterfinal game against Berryville.
