New school in Bella Vista approved by school board

GRAVETTE -- A measure to build a new elementary school in Bella Vista as part of the Gravette school system will be placed on the ballot in the annual school election on Sept. 16. Included in the proposal is a five or six classroom addition to the high school.

The Gravette School Board, in a 4-3 split vote, approved a time line to place the measure on the ballot. Board members Susan Santos, Jack Skillett, Jim Singleton and John Edwards voted to seek a millage increase to fund the projects. Opposed were board members Jay Oliphant, Dan Alsup and Dan Yates. Also approved, with only Yates opposing, was a schematic design for the new school.

The measure was in question since a 3-3 tie vote on Nov. 11 resulted in no board action. John Edwards, one of seven board members, was unable to attend the November meeting.

Since that time, the measure has been discussed by the board and at two public information sessions.

The action Monday was one of the first agenda items of a lengthy business session. A full report of that meeting will be in next week's Eagle Observer.
