Team Spark from CrossChurch Community 4-H Club won a second place award for project research at the First Lego League Robotics State Championship in Mountain Home on Dec. 21.

The Gentry-based robotics team competed in three parts -- the robot game, project and core values.

Their high score in the robot game this year was 240 points. For their project, they had to solve a real-world problem. They chose to create a button called "The Wizard Button." It is a button you can press if you're stuck in your storm shelter to alert the first responders by email, strobe light or cell phone.

The team earned its second place award for the research and knowledge the project showed.

"My favorite part of being on Team Spark is I am learning how to build and program robots," team member Joshua Kay said.

The eight-member team included Kimberly Kay of Gentry, Valerie Kay of Gentry, Joshua Kay of Gentry, Jonathan Yeow of Bentonville, Milton Turner of Rogers, Nathen Palmer of Bentonville, Emily Jessen of Decatur and Treyton Smith of Bella Vista.

CrossChurch Community 4-H Club, based in Rogers, offers Robotics teams and STEM activities for ages 5-18 and welcomes new members. They also have other adult-led projects such as horse, computer engineering, minecraft, and arts and crafts.
