Fifteen members and one guest braved the cold January wind and gathered at the Community Building for the monthly meeting of the Maysville E.H. Club.

Gwen Singleton and Jewel Crawley served as hostesses for the lunch. The business meeting was called to order and a welcome extended by Orpha Wardlaw.

Melinda Crawley led the group singing Winter Wonderland followed by the pledge and a short story entitled "Secrets of the Frying Pan."

Bert Ballman gave a very informative lesson on Skin cancer: What to look for and how to prevent it. The most common type of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma, followed by squamous cell carcinoma. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Caucasians and men over 50 are at a higher risk of developing melanoma, but before age 40, melanoma rates are higher among women. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for adults 25-29 years old. Melanoma is a cancer that begins in the pigment cells. The major risk factor for melanoma is UV light exposure. Just tanning four times increases the risk for melanoma by 11 percent. People with numerous moles, history of sunburns or a family history of melanoma are at greater risk for skin cancer. Things you can do to help prevent skin cancer are: avoid tanning, seek the shade, cover up (long sleeves), use sunscreen, do self exams. If you have a "lesion" that does not heal or bleeds easily, a blemish that lasts for longer than four weeks, visible blood vessels in or around a sore, or a shiny pink patch, bump or nodule you should see a dermatologist. Yearly skin exams by a dermatologist are a must. A good reminder is to check your birthday suit on your birthday!

Eye openers given were: Clean iron skillets by heating them and also used dryer sheets make good mini blind dust cloths. Cultural art was given by Carol Loux who showed a small kitchen towel made by her mother.

Sylvia Tucker and Melinda reported on the building usage and Bert Ballman reported on maintenance. Rick Burrow and his crew have been installing the new metal roof this past week and it is almost completed. Our next project is to secure funds for insulating the attic and upgrading the heating system. Orpha refreshed our minds on upcoming events and projects.
