Run to kick off day

It is amazing to witness the dedication long-distance runners exhibit as they participate in races across the country.

Runners must endure intense physical stress in order to compete in even the simplest of venues. But one factor that is often overlooked by these athletes, especially outdoor participants, is the weather.

During last year's Decatur Barbecue Fun Run, the weather turned violent just before the 7 a.m. start time. Severe storms moved through the Decatur area bringing with them heavy rain, hail and dangerous lightning. There was a real possibility the race would have to be canceled for 2013.

As organizers waited under cover of the pavilion at Edmiston Park, runners, like the heavy rain, came flooding into the park. They were determined to run the race no matter what the weather was doing at the time.

At 7 a.m., in the middle of the heavy rain and lightning, 30 runners waited at the starting line for the crack of the starter pistol. With a boom, the three races -- 2K, 5K and 10K of the 2013 Decatur Barbecue took to the streets.

One lesson learned from that race was never to count out your runners until they cross the finish line.

So, whether it be a driving thunderstorm or a clear sunny morning, the Decatur Barbecue Fun Run will take to the streets Aug. 2 at Edmiston Park, at the parking area near the Austin Street entrance. Check-in will be held in the park's pavilion beginning at 6:30 a.m. The races begin at 7.

There will again be three separate races, the 2K, 5K and 10K. There is a $20 registration fee payable during check-in.
