Maysville EH Club News

MAYSVILLE -- A farewell party was the main focus of the May meeting of the Maysville EH Club. Mary Crawley, a long-time member, recently moved to Hiwasse and, although we wish her many years of happiness in her new home, we will miss her in our club and community. We had a special luncheon, cake and activities to honor her. Melinda Crawley was hostess for the luncheon. Fourteen members and six guests were in attendance.

Our meeting was called to order by the club president and visitors were welcomed. The group sang "Edelweiss," followed by the Pledge and recitation of the 23rd Psalm.

Melinda Crawley gave this month's lesson about container gardening. She noted that some vegetables are better suited for container production than others. Select crops with a smaller, confined growth habit for best results. Some good choices are tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, green onions, radishes and yellow squash. You should match the size of the container to the mature size of crops and consider the growth habit. The container can restrict root growth, so provide ample space. Plan ahead for crops that need cages or trellises. When planting in used containers, be sure and wash with soap and water, then disinfect with 10 percent household bleach solution. Allow it to dry, then rinse again with clean water. For large containers, consider setting them on rolling platforms if mobility is needed. Potting mix available from garden centers is fine for a few containers. If you have numerous containers, you can make your own homemade mix but there are some cautions and it is advisable to have it tested through the UA Cooperative Extension Service. More information on container gardening can be obtained through the Extension Office.

Cultural arts were given by Dianna Afuvai and Robin Reichardt. Dianna showed some baskets she decorated with torn material. And Robin showed a wreath she made at a recent county cultural art workshop. It was made with pages from a song book which were rolled and glued together.

Katherine Tucker read the minutes and gave a financial report. Roll was called. Final plans were made for the spring yard sale fundraiser. The club rents booths for $10 and this has become an annual event. Proceeds are used for building upkeep and expenses. Orpha reminded us of the upcoming Fun Day which will be June 13. This is a day other county clubs join us in Maysville for activities and a fun time. Items are still needed for the county Ronald McDonald project.

We extend an invitation to potential new members or guests to join us the fourth Thursday of each month.

Meeting was adjourned with the benediction.
