Gravette council approves firearms ordinance

GRAVETTE -- Gravette City Council held its regular meeting Thursday night, Feb. 27, with all council members present.

Allyson Ransom and Sally Shorter were sworn in as new members of the Gravette library commission. Allyson will serve as the new secretary for the commission and Sally will serve as its treasurer.

Two ordinances were passed.

Ordinance No. 14-02 prohibits the discharge of firearms within the city limits except by property owners (with five or more acres of agricultural property) on their own land, by police officers in law-enforcement training activities or in the line of duty, or by a citizen defending himself. Anyone violating this ordinance will be charged with a misdemeanor and is subject to a fine of up to $500.

Ordinance No. 14-03 was to split a lot on property owned by Charles and Jessica Eldred on Loma Linda Road. The property is outside the city limits but within the city's planning district.

The council voted to close account number 10111 at the Bank of Gravett. All checks for the account have been used and it is being closed as part of an account consolidation begun two years ago.

The council voted to extend the Consent Administrative Order with the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality. This will give the city six more months to evaluate the sewer treatment system's performance and make necessary adjustments.

All votes on actions taken were unanimous.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Byron Warren read his State of the City address (See Page 5A).
