Vang earns top seat in flute at state

DECATUR -- Ger Vang, principal flute for the Decatur High School band, earned the first chair position in the 2013-14 Arkansas All-Star Band competition held at Riverview High School in Searcy Feb. 13.

He competed against 30 flutists from around the state for this honor.

Vang will travel to Atkins High School near Russellville on April 4 and 5 to participate in the Arkansas All-Star Band clinic and concert.

Vang also traveled to Arkansas State University in Jonesboro on Feb. 15 to audition for the All-State Band. He was among 90 high school flutists vying for a spot on the Arkansas All-State Symphonic Band. He took third chair in the competition.

He traveled to Hot Springs Feb. 20 to participate in the two-day Arkansas All-State Music Clinic held at the Hot Springs Convention center.

After an intense rehearsal schedule, Vang participated in the Feb. 21 Symphonic Band concert, under the direction of Robert Carnochan from the University of Texas, Austin.

Vang has participated in several area events, including the Decatur Christmas Parade, Christmas Festival, concert band and pep band.
