DECATUR -- "We have actually been working on buying the land from Blake Evans for three years," Charles Linam, Decatur Mayor, said.

The land Linam was referring to is two tracts of land next to Edmiston Park. The deal was finalized and announced at the March 10 city council meeting.

"The land went from Blake to Chambers Bank last July, and we have been working with Chambers since then," Linam stated.

The city purchased the land from Chambers Bank for $40,000, half of which was funded by a grant acquired in July on Decatur's behalf by Mary Lou Slinkard, state representative for District 92.

The first tract of land is along the west side of the existing ball field from Austin Street to Arkansas Highway 102. This was originally to be used as a 13-lot housing development with a street connecting Austin and Highway 102. The second tract was to be developed as a 14-lot cul-de-sac with an entrance off Highway 102.

Over the past 25 years, the city has been maintaining the grounds and the property. The city uses the lots for ball fields and Decatur Barbecue parking. The city plans to continue using the land for these and other events at both Edmiston and Veterans Parks.

"This fall, the part of the land off Highway 102 will be used for a circus that will be coming to town," Linam said.

The added land around the ball fields will help to bring more baseball and softball events to Decatur and help boost the local economy.

"This will allow the high school and other summer leagues to have baseball tournaments at the park," Larry Ben, Decatur school superintendent, stated.

Linam expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped to make this long-awaited addition to Edmiston Park a reality.

"Thanks to Chambers Bank -- they have been very good to deal with -- and also to Mary Lou Slinkard," Linam said. "We are very happy!"
