DECATUR -- The Decatur Chamber of Commerce will host the first annual "Come Fly With Me" 5K run at Crystal Lake Airport Saturday, March 29, at 10 a.m. In addition to the 5K run, there will be a 1 mile "colors" run for children and families.
The Decatur Chamber of Commerce worked with Rush Racing in Bentonville to put on a first class 5K event that both runners and their families will enjoy. The race is designed to be a family-oriented event.
The airport shares facilities with Crystal Lake, which offers picnic tables and plenty of space for children to run and play.
"If a family wants to bring a lunch and have a picnic, they can do that," Stacy Brooks, chairperson for the 5K run committee, explained. "If they want to go hiking around the lake, they can do that. If the kids want to bring out kites to fly, they can do that. If a runner just wants to come do the run and leave, they can do that. This is a great event for everyone."
Brooks also noted that the 5K committee was thrilled when Mike Trusty, one of the owners of Crystal Lake Estates, offered the airport as the starting point for the race.
"Not only does the 5K race course provide a nice challenging course by going across the hills and through the beautiful trees, but you also finish the race by running down the airport runway to the finish line. How often does a person get to run on an actual operating airport runway?" Brooks asked.
The colors run, starting at 11 a.m., is a 1-mile family run in which participants get a chance to run on an airport runway and go through multiple arches where they get sprayed with several colors.
Early registration will be held at the Gallery Cafe in Decatur on Friday, March 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. Sign-ups the day of the race will be located outside the airport administration building, beginning at 9 a.m.
The Chamber expressed thanks to sponsors -- Crystal Lake Estates, Crystal Lake Farms, Decatur Medical Clinic, Decatur State Bank and Arvest Bank.
