Decatur girls' softball team wins first game

DECATUR -- With the coming of spring comes softball. The Decatur Bulldogs fast-pitch softball team traveled to Everton to take on the class 1A Bruno-Pyatt Patriots March 14. The Bulldogs pulled off their first victory, defeating the Patriots, 10-7.

"This was the second time we've been on the field this year," Bill Niven, Decatur softball coach, stated. "We made lots of mistakes."

Freshman Cameron Shaffer did exceptionally well at the mound, striking out 16 and walking 5.

"Cameron did an excellent job pitching. We just got to get more help behind her," Niven said.

The top of the batting lineup did a good job hitting the ball. Kara Becker hit 3 for 6, Courtney Kumm hit 3 for 5, with a triple, double and single, and Cameron Shaffer hit 2 for 4.

"It was a good opening win," Nivens concluded.
