Gravette girls play weekend games

GRAVETTE -- After a disappointing loss to Springdale Har-Ber on March 7, the Lady Lions came back to defeat Lincoln and Paris but dropped two to Van Buren.

Lincoln 2

The Gravette girls faced Lincoln on Friday and came away with a 5-2 victory after being down 2-0 after the first two innings of play.

Gravette picked up its first run in the top of the third when Melanie Bunch walked, stole second and then advanced to third on a single to first base by Meagan Ward. She made it across the plate on a throw.

In the top of the fourth, Emily Miller tripled to left field and scored on a sacrifice by Ashleigh Horn. Lindsee LaBrecque followed that with a solo home run to left field, to put the Lady Lions up by one.

Though they had all they needed, the Lady Lions added another two in the top of the fifth when Bunch made it to first on an error, Jaye Chalk sacrificed and Bunch stole home. Samantha Pruitt singled to center field and scored when Miller hit a line-drive double to center.

Miller had two hits and an RBI in the game. LaBrecque pitched 4 1/2 innings and struck out seven.

Van Buren 5

Gravette 1

The Gravette girls faced Van Buren on Friday and were only able to score one run in the four inning game -- in the third when Bunch singled to center field and Pruitt later drove her in with a line-drive double to left field.

Van Buren was able to score 5 runs on 9 hits in the game.

Paris 2

Though Paris put 2 runs on the board in their opening at-bat on Saturday morning, Gravette answered with three and went unanswered as they put on another three runs each in the second and third and two runs in the fourth.

Miller hit an RBI home run in the first inning to get Gravette on the board.

Ward had three hits in the game and one RBI. Miller, Destiny Laymon and LaBrecque each had two hits. Miller picked up three RBIs.

LaBrecque pitched and struck out eight.

Gravette 6

Paris 0

In a second game against Paris, Saturday afternoon, the Lady Lions shut out their opponents, 6-0.

Gravette took a commanding lead in the bottom of the second with two outs when LaBrecque made it to first on an error, then stole second, and Laymon drove her to third with a single to the short stop, giving LaBrecque the chance to steal home. Laymon, McAfee and Bunch also scored in the inning.

In the third, Miller and Horn crossed home plate too.

LaBrecque pitched all five innings and picked up seven strike outs in the game.

Van Buren 7

Gravette 0

In a final game on Saturday, the Lady Lions were shut out by Van Buren, 7-0.

Miller picked up two of Gravette's four hits. LaBrecque pitched her third game of the day and struck out four Van Buren batters.
