Gravette receives quarter million for street funding

GRAVETTE -- Funding in the amount of a quarter-million dollars has been awarded the city of Gravette to fund several street improvement projects, Mayor Byron Warren told the Eagle Observer.

The announcement came from the Arkansas Highway Department "State Aid Street Program," with money allocated from the one-quarter cent temporary sales tax approved by state voters last year. The tax authorized issuing bonds for interstate highway improvements. The Bella Vista bypass is also benefiting from the funds, a portion of which go to counties and cities throughout the state.

A major project is for Dallas Street, S.W., from the Second Avenue intersection west on Dallas to the first south curve, several blocks west of Pop Allum Park.

The second project will involve Irving Street, S.W., and Jackson Street, which joins Irving, south to the "Y" intersection at Ozarks Community Hospital.

The third project is Eighth Street, N.E., from the Ridge Road intersection north, as well as the streets in Touch-Me-Not Estates: Dogwood Lane, Deer Ridge Road, Red Fox Road and Fern Valley Road.

The fourth project involves White Oak Drive and Redbud Lane, N.E., north of the SportsWired operation.

Mayor Warren said the city applied for the funds, the first being made available from the sales tax. The $250,000 amount is the limit which can be awarded to any one entity during the current allocation of funds.

Altogether $21 million for 97 projects throughout the state have been approved during the current cycle.

A representative from the State Highway Department toured the city with Warren earlier this year, leading to the project being approved by the state committee.

Warren said the Highway Department will advertise for bids and will be in charge of the project locally. The city will also be eligible to seek funds for future projects, the Mayor added.
