GENTRY -- Speeches, fire trucks, fire safety instruction and good food were used to mark the 100th birthday of the Gentry Volunteer Fire Department; and the day was an enjoyable one for firefighters and their families and for others -- especially the children -- who came out to enjoy the special celebration.

Children were shown the fire trucks and educated about fire safety. Many had their pictures taken on or beside a fire truck. Children were given junior firefighter helmets and badges. And all who came out had opportunity to enjoy a grilled lunch and visit with fire department members.

Speeches were given by Gentry's mayor, Kevin Johnston, and by county judge, Robert Clinard.

One speech was heard in the nation's capitol and will be recorded in the Congressional Record. Congressman Steve Womack commended the Gentry Fire Department on its 100th birthday for its tireless efforts to protect the lives and property of residents of Gentry and the surrounding communities. Womack made mention of the department's beginning in 1914, of the purchase of its first fire truck in the 1940s and of the countless hours and self-sacrificing dedication of Gentry's firefighters over its 100-year history. His office presented the department with a medallion to commemorate the occasion.
