DECATUR -- "I like to hunt and fish," was one of many responses Toby Conrad made during a "Meet the New High School Principal" assembly in Peterson Gym on May 7.

This was the first time Conrad addressed the full student body of Decatur High.

"I like to play basketball, although I am not as nimble as I used to be," Conrad replied to one question.

Conrad explained his philosophy of discipline as the student body listened intently to every word he spoke.

"My goal is to give each and every one of you the very best education possible," Conrad stated. "I will do everything in my power to help you reach your full potential."

At the conclusion of the assembly, outgoing principal, Deborah Coffer, gathered the cheerleaders to lead the student body in the Bulldog cheer.

The air in the gym reverberated with the sounds of "B-U-L-L-D-O-Gs" as the entire student body engaged in the cheer.

Later in the afternoon, Coffer introduced Conrad during the last 2013-14 teachers' meeting held in the high school library.

After dispensing with end-of-school-year business, the meeting turned to presenting gifts from the teachers to Conrad. The gifts he received ranged from a box of facial tissue to a life preserver.

"I know the lakes in Kansas are only about ankle deep," James Garner, English and AP teacher, stated, "but the lakes are much deeper here and we think you might need this, just in case."

At the conclusion, Jason Porter, baseball coach, led the entire Decatur teaching staff in calling the Hogs.

"We just wanted to show you the proper way to 'Call the Hogs' on your way to becoming a Razorback fan," Porter concluded.

Conrad will assume his duties as principal for grades six through 12 in July.
