DECATUR -- The play-off hopes got a little brighter for the Decatur Bulldogs Friday as they handed the Union Christian Eagles, then 4-2 in conference play, their third conference loss of the season at Bulldog Stadium.

Tony Mendoza made a 42-yard reception run for the first score of the game about midway through the second quarter. His point after attempt was good, making it 7 to 0 Bulldogs at the half.

In the third quarter, Decatur drove to the one yard line. The Eagles held strong for two downs, but Victor Urquidi ran the ball into the end zone, making it a 13 to 0 game.

The Bulldog defense stopped the Eagles numerous times, but the Eagles did get through once and add a point after.

Decatur scored a final touchdown in the fourth quarter when Urquidi fought his way into the end zone after a long drive. The final was 19 to 7 Decatur Bulldogs.

"The offensive line blocked well and we were able to run the football," said Shane Holland, Decatur football coach. "Allan and Victor had over 100 yards rushing. They each played very well on their own."

"Coach Unger had a very good game plan put together for [the defense] and the kids went out and executed it well to play very, very good defensively," Holland said.

Jesse Bruce was named overall player, Allan Castaneda offensive player, and Victor Urquidi defensive player of the game.

To get a play-off berth Decatur must defeat the Leftwich Rattlers, and Western Yell County must defeat Union Christian. Both games will be played on Friday night.

The Bulldogs make their final regular season appearance against the Leftwich Rattlers at 7 p.m. Friday in Bulldog Stadium. It will be senior night for Decatur, honoring seniors Victor Urquidi, Allan Castaneda, Brody Funk, Joey Barnes, Jerry Green, Hector Aguilar, Jesse Bruce and Eddie Lucio.
