HIWASSE -- A popular spot in Hiwasse is back in business and area residents once again have a convenient place to stop and take a break.

John and Julie Holloway returned to operating the shop they left a decade ago and reopened the Hiwasse Store on Oct. 17. The convenience store and gas station is located on the curve at the intersection of Arkansas Highways 72 and 279.

The Holloways owned the store from 2001 to 2005 but sold it and moved on to other interests. They also owned Tri-State Propane in Hiwasse for 16 years before selling it about 2 1/2 years ago. John has been managing the propane business since the sale. They also raise beef cattle on their farm, which is located near Hiwasse.

Many customers are old friends. John, the son of Bonnie Holloway, is a Hiwasse native and graduated from Gravette High School in 1972. Julie is a Bentonville High School graduate. Both are well known in the area. Their three children attended Gravette schools from kindergarten through graduation and they currently have two grandchildren in the Gravette schools.

The store's deli sandwiches are a popular item and food offerings also include Hunt Brothers Pizza and a daily special during the week. Breakfast is served until about 10 a.m. and includes biscuits and gravy and biscuit sandwiches. Tables are available for dining in the store or food is available for take-out.

Five gas pumps out front provide regular gasoline and off-road diesel. The store shelves are stocked with a supply of groceries, personal-care items, school supplies and household items.

John and Julie operate the store with the help of seven or eight part-time employees.

Business hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The store phone number is 787-9661.
