GENTRY -- For Gentry area residents, the Sunrise Cafe, located at 136 S. Gentry Blvd. in Gentry, offers another option for dining out at noon and in the evening.

Though original plans for the cafe were to be open for breakfast and lunch, the owners, Chai Lee and Dao Thao, who moved to Gentry from the Tulsa (Okla.) area two years ago, saw the need for a Gentry restaurant which serves an evening meal and decided instead to operate their business from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The restaurant, which offers both American and Asian dishes, opened Aug. 15 but had a ribbon cutting and grand opening last Thursday. And though open only two months, business has been good and more and more people are stopping there for lunches and suppers.

This is the first time for Chai Lee and Dao Thao to own a restaurant, but they have helped friends with a similar business and are doing something they say they have wanted to do. And the dishes they serve customers make it clear they know how to cook and prepare delicious food.

Those attending the ribbon cutting Thursday morning were given a sampling of the cafe's egg rolls and dessert dishes. And patrons of the business on Thursday commented on the excellent food and service.

The cafe serves a wide variety of sandwiches and burgers, with all the fixings to go with them. Dinner platters include chicken alfredo, shrimp alfredo, pork chops, chicken-fried steak, fried fish and more. On the Asian side, there is curry chicken or fish, pad Thai rice, and stir fry with options for vegetables, meat and peppers. And, of course, they serve home-made egg rolls.

"We cook foods we like and could eat every day and never get tired of them," said Dao Thao on Thursday.

She said the cafe was adding Pho to its menu on Saturdays. Pho, she said, is an Asian dish with beef and noodles. She said restaurant patrons would be served the ingredients to mix to their own liking. On Friday, fried fish is a specialty.
