Mayoral candidate in Decatur has campaign banners stolen

DECATUR -- Imagine for a moment running for a public office and spending valuable resources on materials for the campaign. On the way home you discover that two of your campaign banners, which have adorned the same location for a month, have disappeared.

For Decatur mayoral candidate Bob Tharp, this scenario became a reality Aug. 30. Tharp's wife Lee was driving down East Roller Ave. in Decatur when she noticed that two of Tharp's political banners were gone. The signs were located near the Decatur post office.

Tharp reported to Decatur police that he had seen the signs Friday night about 5 p.m. as he was returning home. The only things left were the poles that held the banners.

It is against the law to steal or deface any political signs or banners. According to state statute 536-102, theft of political yard signs is considered a Class C misdemeanor and is punishable by fines and jail time depending on the value of the signs.

Any persons having information on the theft should contact the Decatur Police Department at 752-3911.
