Lady Pioneers come up short

GENTRY -- The Lady Pioneers lost to Westville, Okla., in non-conference play on Sept. 8. The girls lost, 3-1.

Greg Johnson, Gentry head volleyball coach, said it was the first set the girls have won in competitive play this season.

"It was the first game we won, so it was a start," Johnson said.

On Sept. 9, the Gentry girls lost to Huntsville, 3 to 1 as well. Though the girls did not win the match, Coach Johnson said the girls are improving and playing a more consistent game.

"Our consistency is improving," he said.

On Thursday, the girls traveled to Springdale to face a tough team from Shiloh Christian. The girls lost, 3-0, but played strong in the final set.

"Despite losing the first two games pretty badly, my players did not let them get into their heads and we scored 22 in the third," Johnson said.

The girls were to host Prairie Grove on Tuesday (after press time) and Lincoln on Thursday. Games begin at 4:30 p.m., with varsity following the junior high game.
