Lions shred Jay Bulldogs

GRAVETTE -- The Lions will begin their season with a big win behind them to bolster their confidence after soundly defeating Jay (Okla.) High School, 41 to 7, at Jay on Friday.

The Lions blew open the game in the opening quarter, scoring 28 points and holding the Jay Bulldogs scoreless.

The Bulldog's only score came in the second quarter on a touchdown and point-after kick, but the Lions picked up another TD before the half and yet another in the third quarter.

Gravette junior Jackson Soule was the Lions' defensive player of the game with five solo tackles, three assisted tackles, two sacks, a pass batted down and 11 negative yards for the Bulldogs.

Quarterback duties were shared by Kyler Bunch, Bryce Moorman and Kilby Roberts. Bunch also carried one into the end zone.

The Lions did most of their damage on the ground, with 46 carries and 341 rushing yards. The Gravette team picked up another 85 yards in the air, including a touchdown pass to Michael Fowler and five received passes for a total of 50 yards to Layne Martinez.

Gravette senior Cedric Duarte carried three into the end zone. Bryce Moorman and Michael Olvera each had one TD. Duarte added to his touchdown carries and 228 rushing yards by making five of six PAT kicks for the Lions.

The Lions' defense had a great night as well, with four sacks and 19 lost yards for the Bulldogs, in addition to holding the Bulldogs to a single TD in the game.

The Lions are scheduled to travel to Lincoln and take on the Wolves at 7 p.m. Friday.
