Maysville EH Club News

Maysville EH Club members met at the Community Building for the regular March meeting. Gwen Singleton was the hostess for the noon meal. Gina Becker was our visitor and we are happy to have her become a new member.

Club president Jane Wilber called the meeting to order and led the group in singing "What A Wonderful World." Inspiration was a poem by Gwen entitled, "The Lesson From The Oyster."

Robin Reichardt gave a lesson on Repurpose, Reposition, Redeem. An area of environmental concern is waste. It is called garbage, trash and municipal solid waste -- things like the potato peelings left over from dinner preparation, a broken flip-flop, and empty mustard jar or a candy wrapper. Over the past 30 years, the waste produced in the U.S. has more than doubled. People are buying more convenience items and more disposables. In 2006, U.S. residents, businesses and institutions produced more than 251 million tons of municipal solid waste or trash, which is approximately 1.6 pounds of waste per person per day. In Arkansas, we produce even more -- 9.8 pounds per person per day (before recycling). Arkansas recycles 42 percent of the waste it generates. Solid waste has been a problem for centuries. When solid waste is not recycled, it often goes into landfills. It takes 5-6 months for a cotton sock to disintegrate, 40-50 years for a leather belt, and 1 million years for a plastic bottle!

Experts recommend consumers reduce, recycle and reuse. Buy items with less packaging, items in containers that can be recycled and "upcycle," which means reusing items like an empty towel roll to make a storage tube for plastic bags or electric cords. Soft drink can tabs can be placed over a hanger hook then another hanger can be hooked through the tab to hang several garments together. Use your imagination for ideas on reusing or more information can be obtained through online websites or from the County Extension Office.

A helpful hint was given by Sylvia Tucker about precautions in carrying large sums of money. Carol Loux showed a beautiful tablecloth embroidered by her mother.

The secretary read the minutes and members answered the roll call telling their favorite color.

Items of discussion were the upcoming Community Yard Sale which will be May 30th. Anyone wishing to rent a space may do so by contacting Gwen Singleton. Booths are $10. Curtain Call March 27, Birthday Party for Mary Crawley March 29, Maysville Day June 6, County Council May 1.

Our annual spring fundraiser will be April 11. We will be serving spaghetti. Adult meals are $3 and children $3. The barbecue grill will be given away that evening, so if you haven't bought your tickets, they can be obtained from any club member.

The meeting was adjourned with the benediction.
